IUS Path in Delivering UN SDGs

International University of Sarajevo is dedicated to make impact on society through delivering UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therfore, the Agenda 2030 has been gradually inbuilt in IUS reaserch, learning, teaching, and projects, which inlude local community.

While the SDG activities have been taking a full swing in the past three years, in the comming period IUS is ready to take SDG implementation to the next level. As an old saying reasds: „Thing Well Begun Is Half Done" the achivement of SDG goals is planned to become an integral part IUS future Strategy 2021-2026.

So far, under full support of IUS Rector Prof. Dr Ahmet Yıldırım, the folllowing have been achived:

  • IUS Ranking by Times Higher Education Impact Ranking: IUS ranked in Times Higher Education Impact Ranking a prestigious worldwide university ranking organization from London for a third year in a row, as the only university from BiH  which appeared in this prestigues ranking.
  • IUS Memberships at SDSN: IUS has officially become a member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) at the end of June 2020. The SDSN network was established in 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General, and aims to mobilize global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030) and the Paris Climate Agreement (2015).
  • IUS SDG Team established: Beginning of October, 2020, the IUS SDG steering committee was formed comprised of enthusiastic volunteers: IUS academicians, administrative staff and students. The SDG Steering Committee will be in charge of directing and supporting implementation of UN SDGs at IUS.
  • IUS membership in ESSSR and IUSDRP: In order to further strengthen its international cooperation in the field of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), in mid-October 2020, IUS joined two internationally recognized research networks in the area of SDG – the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Program (IUSDRP) and the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR).
  • SDGs in the IUS curricula: Through its curricula several IUS Study Programmes offer sustainability topics in their course offer. For instance, the courses which already offer sustainability topics are as follows: HUM100 Understanding the Sustainable Development Agenda, IR476 Global Environmental Issues, IR467 Energy Security and IR474 Gender in International Relations hosted by International Relations (Faculty of Business and Administration), BIO410 Ecology and Environmental Engineering offered by Genetics and Bioengineering (Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences).
  • IUS in SDG Action : IUS has launched a new strategic campaign IUS in SDG Action. One of the stages of this campaign is the concretization of plans in the field of recycling, all with the aim of raising awareness to the protection of environment. In this regard, at the end of May, 2021, IUS signed a contract with BH. recycling company Aida-Commerce d.o.o. with the aim of starting a joint waste recycling activity on the university campus. Through a promotional campaign, IUS invited all interested students, academic and administrative staff who want to contribute to the recycling project to get involved in this action.

This is just the beginning of IUS path to its contribution to the sustainable goals and UN Agenda 2030.

IUS Quality Assurance Office initiated all activities related to the implementation of SDG at IUS.
